Photoshop tutorial – Designing contact or mail icon

Hi, today we will start our icon designing series of tutorials.
First icon is contact or mail icon.

Create new document.

Go to View->New Guide

New Guide settings shown below

Do same but make sure to set horizontal guide.

Turn on grid view. Go to view->Show->Grid.

Select pen tool and create shape like shown below.

Create new layer. Name it ‘mail main body’. Create vector mask.
And fill it with #fff1b9.

You should have result something like this.

Select pen tool and create shape.

Name it ‘letter_top’.
Fill it with same color.

Now make shape like this one, and call it ‘letter_bottom’.
I turn ‘mail main body’ layer opacity down to 60%, to make letter top and letter bottom visible.

Select pen tool and create path like this.
Select ‘mail main body’ layer. Then select brush tool. Brush tool setting shown below.

Foreground color is #4b3300.
Now select pen tool and make stroke path. Do the same with right side.


Select pen tool and make path like shown below.
Do the same with other side. After all you will have result something like this.

 

Now select ‘letter bottom’ layer and make path like shown below. And stroke path.

Select ‘mail main body’, go to Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur, gaussian blur settings shown below.

Do the same with ‘letter bottom’ layer.

Now time to add some shadows and lights to our flat ‘letter’.

Dodge tool usage:

Burn tool usage:

Result will be something like this

Create new layer under ‘mail main body’ layer. Name it ‘shadow’.
Select pen tool and make path like shown below.

Select brush tool, setting shown below
Foreground color set to #303030.


Select pen tool. Choose ‘stroke path’ from context menu, settings shown below. Make sure of ‘simulate pressure’ is checked.

Go to Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur, settings shown below.

Final Result
